Sat Jan 9 12:53:10 EST 2010 Unix and atomic operations -- It is extremely useful to know what things Unix can (or is sup- posed to) do atomically. Atomic operations are those which either fail or suceed - leaving no chance for an inconsistent internal state. This is important in many distributed and multi-pro- cess/threaded applications.
