My Trees

Google

I don't know if it is being out in the country and having the land to play, but I have recently taken upon an interest in growing trees. That sounds silly since I am such a skeptic of human caused global warming, but I find interest relaxing and very satisfying. It is also a good thing to do for the environment whether you are an Al Gore fanboy or not. In any case, I found out that my grandfather used to grow Bald Cypress trees and would plant them all over Metairie and New Orleans. I found this out after I started my little hobby, and it sounded like something I'd like to do - so I guess it is in my genes somewhere.

On my property, I have the following trees to which I tend:
  • 2 very large Water Oaks - most likely >60 years old; these trees supposedly don't last too long, but I hope they are hear as long as I am.
  • 2 medium Water Oaks - I estimate that they are about 10-15 years old. Their trunks are about 6 inches in diameter.
  • 1 young Shumard Oak - I just planted this tree in the Fall, and it is starting to sprout. It is going to be very nice when it is full.
  • 2 Southern Magnolias - one is a large tree that has got to be >80 years old. The other one is fairly mature, but has been damaged by lightening. I am doing my best to bring it back.
  • 1 baby Water Oak - I've been nurturing this one since I first moved it. In the beginning, it was about 13 inches tall. In about a year, it has sprouted to over 4 feet tall.
  • 1 large Fig tree; I have no idea how old it is, but it's spread is about 20 feet across.
  • 4 Bald Cypress trees (in ground) - I just planted them, and all but 1 are coming in nicely. I am having issues with one of them, but I think I am working it through its issues ok.
  • 3 Bald Cypress trees (in pot) - waiting for an opportunity to plant them; will have to wait until ~Jan'09
  • 6 Crape Myrtles - these were planted mainly for some color, but they are doing well
  • 1 baby Live Oak seedling - I am growing this from an acorn I got at LSU. Currently it is 2 inches tall, and I hope to plant it on my property come this fall or the next. It just depends on its size.
